Personalizing Your Activities

Analysts and Moderators can craft uniquely tailored research experiences using two powerful activity customization tools: Text Piping and Visibility Logic.

Text Piping allows Admins to personalize content within tasks by inserting a participant's previous answer into follow-up questions or instructions, creating a contextual, conversational feel.

Visibility Logic allows Admins to dynamically control which tasks or questions participants see based on previous responses and segment criteria, ensuring a relevant and efficient research path.

Using Text Piping

Text Piping enables administrators to dynamically embed prior participant responses from a designated Poll, Grid, Sort & Rank, or Fill-in-the-Blanks Poll source task, directly into the instructional text or question prompts of a subsequent follow-up task. For example, if a participant states "sustainability" is important in one task, a follow-up task could ask, "You mentioned 'sustainability' is important to you. What aspect of sustainability concerns you most?”

The platform allows administrators to enable this feature at the individual task level when designing an activity. When setting up a follow-up task, Admins can make custom selections to specify which previous task, and which particular Response Type from that task, they want to "pipe" or insert. This selected response is then automatically pulled and displayed within the text of the current task for the participant.

For participants, this means reduced cognitive load and a smoother study flow, as prior answers are contextually referenced. Text Piping also promotes greater response consistency by maintaining participants’ train of thought and enhances engagement by making them feel acknowledged, ultimately aiding recall and encouraging more thoughtful, higher-quality responses.

Using Visibility Logic

Visibility Logic allows researchers to strategically control which tasks individual participants see within an activity. This enables Admins to define distinct pathways for different participants, ensuring that the sequence of tasks dynamically adapts based on predefined conditions, and participants are only presented with content that is relevant to them.

By managing task visibility in a granular way, Admins can define multiple visibility conditions for each task within a single, centralized interface. These conditions can be based on a participant's unique segment assignment, their specific responses to previous tasks, their completion status of certain tasks, or even the completion of an entire activity. This allows Admins to have precise control over who sees what and when.

Visibility Logic also helps Administrators streamline study setup by simplifying logic management and reducing the complexity of designing branching pathways. This also fosters a cleaner study design by minimizing the need for excessive segmentation and encourages higher completion rates and richer, more reliable data.

Using Visibility Logic and Text Piping Together

Administrators can create highly personalized participant experiences by combining both Visibility Logic and Text Piping.

By first using Visibility Logic to define unique pathways, Admins can set conditions at the task level—based on segment, previous responses, or completion status—to ensure participants only see relevant content. For example, if a participant responds "Yes" to a Poll task asking "Are you a current subscriber?", Visibility Logic can reveal a subsequent follow-up task specifically about their subscription experience while simultaneously hiding it from non-subscribers.

Within the follow-up task, Admins can then use Text Piping to further personalize the dialogue by dynamically inserting the participant's prior responses. In this scenario, if that "Yes" subscriber also mentioned their favourite feature was "unlimited access" in another closed-ended question, the follow-up task could then prompt, "You indicated you are a current subscriber and enjoy 'unlimited access'. What makes this feature valuable to you?".

By using the combined power of relevant pathways (via Visibility Logic) and personalized content (via Text Piping), Admins can reduce participant effort, boost engagement, and yield richer, more targeted insights.
