How to Filter Participants in a Study

Use this article to learn how to filter participants within a Study.

Who can filter participants in a study?

Analysts and Moderators can filter participants by pre-defined segments, advanced criteria, or individual selection to analyze responses. These filtering options can be used to create Smart Segments.

Method 1: Filter Participants by Segments

Use this method to quickly filter your Study view by pre-defined Basic Segments or Smart Segments.

  1. Navigate to the Study and select the Summary tab

  2. Click Segments

  3. Select the relevant segment(s) from the dropdown menu list

  4. Select your desired matching logic:

    • Match Any: Displays participants who meet at least one of the selected segment conditions

    • Match All: Displays only participants who meet all of the selected segment conditions simultaneously

After completing the above steps the Summary tab updates immediately to display data corresponding to the selected segment filters.

Method 2: Filter Participants by Advanced Criteria or Specific Selection

Use this method to filter participants based on specific user attributes, create new Smart Segments, or manually choose individual participants.

  1. Navigate to the Study and select the Summary tab

  2. Click Filters

  3. In the pop-up, select one of the following tabs:

    • Advanced Filters: Select specific participant attributes or existing Smart Segments to define your filtering criteria

    • Select Participants: Manually select participants from the participant list to include them in the filtered view

  4. Click Filter to apply your selections

  5. (Optional) If filtering via the Advanced Filters tab, click Save as Smart Segment to save your selected attributes as a Smart Segment for future use.

When the above steps are completed, the Study view refreshes to display data exclusively for the participants matching your advanced filter criteria or manual selection.

Filtering Participants Within an Activity

In addition to filtering at the Study level, Analysts and Moderators can apply these exact segment and attribute filters directly within an individual Activity:

  1. Open the specific Activity

  2. Navigate to the Activity's Responses tab to access the Activity Response Stream

  3. Use the Segments or Filters options at the top of the stream to isolate responses from specific segments or advanced filtering options
