Managing Forums Categories
Similar to the study Discussions, Topics can be categorized into groupings to improve the navigation and organization of content within a Forum. If you suspect a Forum will contain a large number of topics, Categories and Subcategories help ensure that relevant topics are easy to find and participate in.
Manage Categories
Manage Categories is the interface for category and subcategory creation and sorting within a Forum. To manage a Forum category, click on the Options dropdown menu for each forum.
Categories can be sorted manually by dragging the boxes up and down, and subcategories can be sorted by dragging the row up and down or into another category box.
Add Category: Opens the Add Category modal
- Categories must have a name and colour
- Category descriptions are optional
- When Only Analysts can add topics is enabled, non-Analyst users will not be able to add topics to the category
Done: Returns Admin to the Forum’s root list of Topics
Category Options
Each category has a dropdown arrow that surfaces various options.
- View: Directs the user to that category’s page (list of its topics)
- Edit: Opens the Edit Category modal where you can update its Name and Description
- Move: This option is only available for categories that do not have subcategories. It allows you to "demote" the category and turn it into a subcategory of another category.
- Delete: Deleting a category requires confirmation. Only categories without subcategories can be deleted. Deleting a category does not delete its topics. Optionally, the user can select a destination category or subcategory for those topics, or they can be left with no category.
Adding a Subcategory
Subcategories must have a name. When Only Analysts can add topics is enabled, non-Analyst users will not be able to add topics to the subcategory.
Subcategory Options
Each subcategory has a dropdown arrow that surfaces various options.
- View: Directs you to that subcategory’s page (list of it’s topics)
- Edit: Opens the Edit Subcategory modal where you can update its Name and Description
- Move: This option allows you to move the subcategory to a different top-level category, or, “promote” the subcategory to become a top-level category.
- Delete: Deleting a subcategory requires confirmation. Deleting a subcategory does not delete its topics. Optionally, you can select a destination category or subcategory for those topics, or they can be left with no category.
