How to Unlock an Account After Too Many Failed Logins

Use this article to understand self-service account recovery and to manually unlock locked-out user accounts or assign temporary passwords in a Recollective site.

Audience and Permissions

  • Target Audience: Analysts

  • User Roles Affected: Participants, Admins

  • Permissions Required: Site-level Analyst permissions

Self-Service Account Unlocking

Participants and Admins are temporarily locked out of a Recollective site if they exceed the defined number of failed login attempts. Locked-out users can self-service unlock their own account by navigating to the site login page, selecting the password reset option, and providing their registered email address to receive a password reset link.

How to Manually Unlock a User Account

If a user is unable to self-service unlock their account, an Analyst can manually unlock it by following these steps:

  1. Log into your Recollective site as an Analyst.

  2. Navigate to the appropriate user directory based on the locked-out user's role:

  • For Participants: Go to Site Administration > Panelists > Search Panelists.

  • For Administrators: Go to Site Administration > Admins > Search Admins.

  1. Locate the user's account by typing their name or email address into the Search bar.

  2. Click the user's name to open their account Edit page.

  3. Click Unlock Account.

How to Assign a Temporary Password

If the user is unable to reset their password via email, an Analyst can assign a temporary password after unlocking the account:

  1. Locate and open the user's account Edit page via Site Administration > Panelists > Search Panelists (for Participants) or Admins > Search Admins (for Admins).

  2. Locate the password fields on the user's profile edit page.

  3. Enter a new password in the password fields.

  4. Enable the Force password change checkbox.

  5. Click Save to apply your changes.

Temporary Login Instructions Template

After assigning a temporary password, send the following login instructions directly to the user:

URL: {your Recollective site URL}

Username/Email: {User's email address or username}

Password: {temporary password you assigned them}
