Basic Segments allow you to group Panelists, limit content visibility within studies, and filter participant data.
Method 1: Manually Create and Assign Basic Segments
Manually assigning participants to Basic Segments is accomplished in the Site Administration. Only Analysts can manually assign Basic Segments.
Step 1: Create a Basic Segment If you’ve already created the segment, skip to step 2!
Go to Site Administration > Panelists > Segments
Click New Segment and select Basic Segment
Enter a Segment Name
(Optional) Expand Advanced Options to configure study parameters:
Study Visibility: Limit which studies this segment will be visible in
Add Panelists to Studies: Automatically add segment members to specified studies
Remove Panelists from Studies: Automatically remove segment members from specified studies
Click Save to create the Basic Segment
Step 2: Manually Assign Participants to the Basic Segment
Go to Site Administration > Panelists > Segments
Locate and click into the Basic Segment you want to update
(Optional: Use the Segment Type filter or the Search segments… field to locate your segment)
On the Edit: Basic Segment page, click Manage
Select Not Assigned from the dropdown list next to the Segment name
(Optional) Apply filters such as Name, Username, Email, or Assigned Study to narrow the list of participants
Select the checkbox next to each participant you want to assign
At the bottom of the page, a pop-up will appear with a count of how many panelists will be added to the segment
Click Apply to confirm the assignment
Method 2: Assign Participants via Bulk Import
Analysts and Moderators assigned to the study can assign participants to Basic Segments using Bulk Import.
A Bulk Import allows you to create or update Basic Segments for multiple participants simultaneously by importing a spreadsheet file (.XLSX or .XSL).
Step 1: Prepare the Import Spreadsheet
Open a spreadsheet application such as Excel
Add participant Email Addresses or External IDs in the first column
Create a separate column for each Basic Segment you wish to assign
Enter 1 in the segment column for each participant who should be assigned to that Basic Segment. Leave the cell blank if the segment does not apply
Step 2: Upload and Map the Import
Navigate to through Study Admin > Add Participants
Click on Bulk Import a Spreadsheet
Drag and drop or select the file from your device
On the Column Review screen, review each imported column:
For new segments: Select New Segment.
For existing segments: Select Assign Segment and select the matching Basic Segment from the dropdown menu.
Click Start Import to complete the Bulk Import
